IMD Issues Heavy Rainfall Alert Across Arunachal Pradesh

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a warning for widespread heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning across Arunachal Pradesh over the next five days, urging residents to stay vigilant and prepared for possible disruptions.

According to the latest forecast issued by the Meteorological Centre in Itanagar, rainfall activity is set to intensify starting May 24, with several districts likely to experience significant downpours. Upper Siang, Siang, and parts of West Siang have been placed under an orange alert, indicating the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.

A yellow alert has been issued for districts including Lower Dibang Valley, East Siang, Shi-Yomi, and Upper Subansiri, where moderate to heavy rain is expected. Widespread thunderstorm activity is also likely in several western and southern parts of the state, such as Papum Pare, Pakke-Kessang, Lower Siang, Leparada, Kra Daadi, and Kurung Kumey.

While light to moderate rainfall may occur in many areas, isolated pockets could witness intense spells that might trigger waterlogging, landslides, and flash floods, especially in vulnerable and low-lying regions. The weather is likely to show gradual improvement from May 26 onwards, though intermittent showers and thunderstorms may persist in some districts until May 27.

The IMD has advised people living in hilly and riverine areas to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel during heavy spells. District administrations in zones under orange alert have been directed to remain on high alert and keep emergency response teams ready for any eventuality.

This fresh weather warning comes at a time when parts of Arunachal Pradesh are still recovering from earlier spells of heavy rain and flash floods. Authorities have appealed to residents to follow official updates and take necessary precautions to safeguard lives and property.
