Manipur Police Arrest UPPK Cadre in Imphal East, Recover Cache of Arms and Ammunition in Chandel District

Imphal: In a significant anti-insurgency operation, Manipur Police arrested an active cadre of the banned United People’s Party of Kangleipak (UPPK) from Mantripukhri area in Imphal East district. The arrest occurred on March 19, as part of sustained efforts to dismantle militant networks operating in the valley regions.
The arrested individual has been identified as Chungkham Kiran Meitei, alias Lepshinba, aged 23. He is a resident of Khumbong Mayai Leikai under Patsoi police station in Imphal West district. Police described the operation as targeting insurgent elements actively involved in subversive activities.
In a parallel security action on the same day, forces recovered a substantial cache of arms, ammunition, and communication equipment from the general area of Molcham village under Molcham police station in Chandel district. This border-adjacent area, close to the Indo-Myanmar frontier, remains a sensitive zone prone to weapon trafficking and militant movements.
The recovered items include:
One AK-47 rifle along with two magazines
One 9mm carbine machine gun with a magazine
Two grenade detonators
Two additional magazines (for various arms)
Two grenades
194 rounds of ammunition
Five Baofeng VHF radio sets
USB chargers
Authorities noted that the seizure highlights ongoing attempts to move weapons through hill districts, potentially linked to cross-border smuggling and efforts by insurgent groups to regroup. Investigations are underway to determine any connections between the arrested UPPK cadre and the recovered arms cache.
These twin operations underscore the Manipur Police’s intensified crackdown on proscribed outfits amid persistent security challenges in the state. The UPPK, a banned insurgent group, has been under focus in recent drives aimed at curbing extortion, arms proliferation, and threats to public order.
Further probes are expected to reveal more about the networks involved, with officials stressing continued vigilance to maintain peace and stability in both valley and hill areas.
