Arunachal Pradesh is ramping up its disaster response capabilities by organizing routine mock drills and simulation exercises centered on a hypothetical 7.8 magnitude earthquake. These initiatives aim to bolster preparedness, streamline resource deployment, and foster seamless coordination among various departments, according to State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) Secretary Dani Sulu.
During a recent tabletop exercise focused on a multi-state earthquake scenario, Sulu highlighted the importance of empowering state and district-level disaster management bodies to spearhead local response operations. He pointed out that Arunachal Pradesh lies in a highly vulnerable seismic zone, underscoring the necessity for ongoing preparedness strategies and robust institutional frameworks to manage disasters effectively.
The exercise was jointly hosted by the state’s disaster management department and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). It evaluated current readiness levels, refined inter-agency collaboration, and optimized response protocols for potential large-scale earthquakes.
NDMA Senior Consultant Col Nadeem Arshad (Retd) explained that the multi-state initiative seeks to enhance overall coordination and readiness. He stressed that natural disasters transcend state borders, necessitating unified planning and joint efforts among neighboring regions.
In the session, NDMA representatives outlined a comprehensive earthquake scenario, emphasizing the critical role of prompt decision-making, clear communication, and synchronized actions involving all key stakeholders.
The ongoing multi-state drill encompasses Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, and Meghalaya, with officials confirming that a comprehensive full-scale mock exercise, incorporating on-ground response teams, is planned for the near future.
These efforts reflect Arunachal Pradesh’s proactive stance in mitigating seismic risks, promoting regional cooperation, and building resilient communities in India’s Northeast.
