Tawang is hosting the 14th edition of the International Tourism Mart, a flagship event of the Union Tourism Ministry that brings the Northeast’s tourism potential before domestic and international buyers. The three-day event, scheduled for October 29 to 31, is being organised by the Union Ministry of Tourism in association with the Arunachal Pradesh government and the other northeastern states.
More than 200 domestic and international tourism stakeholders are taking part, according to the state Tourism Department. The Mart is expected to host 43 international buyers from 22 countries, alongside domestic buyers, tourism service providers, tour operators and sellers from the eight northeastern states. Union Tourism and Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Minister of State for Tourism Suresh Gopi and Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu are scheduled to attend the inaugural programme.
What the Mart is designed to do
The annual event aims to position the Northeast as a major destination in domestic and international tourism markets by promoting natural beauty, cultural heritage, adventure tourism and distinctive travel experiences. Destination and tourism product presentations by Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura will highlight the attractions of individual states, as well as opportunities to develop joint tourism circuits across the region.
Business-to-business sessions will facilitate interactions between buyers and tourism service providers, helping them develop tourism products, expand market access and establish business partnerships.
Why Tawang is the stage
Tawang, with its monastery, high mountain passes and Himalayan landscapes, is one of the Northeast’s most recognisable destinations. The Chief Minister inspected the venue along with senior officials from the Union and state Tourism Departments and reviewed preparations for the event, according to the state Tourism Department statement.
The choice of Tawang also underlines a wider point about Northeast tourism: the region’s appeal lies not in a single attraction but in a circuit of nature, faith, adventure and living culture. The high-altitude Tawang Marathon, which drew thousands of runners, and the Winter Adventure Tawang initiative for winter sports show how the district is building a year-round calendar rather than relying on a single season.
What success would look like
The real test will come after the stalls close: how many buyer conversations become itineraries and bookable joint circuits across states.
