Thirty-two young students from Itanagar packed their bags, crossed state lines, and came home with more than just memories.
The NSS Cell of Don Bosco College (DBC), Itanagar, represented Arunachal Pradesh at the Northeast NSS Festival held at Kohima Science College, Jotsoma, Nagaland from July 27 to 31. Five days. Thirty-two volunteers. And a performance that made the state proud.
More Than Just A Festival
The festival was organised under the theme ‘Viksit Bharat’ — a vision of a developed India — and what unfolded over those five days was exactly that spirit in action. The volunteers were engaged in various technical sessions on topics ranging from youth empowerment and nation building, employment and economic stability, and mental health. These aren’t just buzzwords scribbled on a banner. For young people from a state that often finds itself fighting for attention on the national stage, conversations around employment and economic stability hit close to home. The sessions clearly meant something.
Bringing the Competition Home
Here’s the part that deserves some applause. The volunteers took part in various competitions and brought home two 2nd prizes — in extempore speech and in folk dance. Extempore speech is no joke. You get a topic, you get a moment to breathe, and then you speak — no notes, no preparation, just your voice and your conviction. And the folk dance win? That’s cultural pride on display, carrying the identity of Arunachal Pradesh into a Northeast stage and letting it shine.
The People Behind the Journey
Thirty-two NSS volunteers were escorted by NSS Programme Officer Samsom Mossang. The role of a programme officer in moments like this often goes unrecognized, but getting 32 young students organized, motivated, and performing at their best across five days in a different state is no small feat. Mossang and the team clearly did something right.
What It Means for the Northeast
Events like the Northeast NSS Festival matter more than the trophy count suggests. They pull young people out of their comfort zones, put them in rooms with peers from across the region, and push them to think, speak, and perform under pressure. For Arunachal, being represented well at such platforms builds a narrative — that the state’s youth are ready, capable, and worth watching.
Don Bosco College’s NSS Cell didn’t just participate. They competed, they connected, and they returned carrying a little more confidence than when they left. That, in the end, is exactly what platforms like this are meant to do.
