Arunachal Pradesh is already bleeding from the wounds of this monsoon — and the India Meteorological Department just confirmed the hits are not stopping.
The IMD’s Meteorological Centre in Itanagar issued a sharp alert on July 29, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall across multiple districts of the state on July 30 and July 31. Thunderstorms and lightning are expected to accompany the rains — making this not just a weather warning, but a serious call to action for every household and authority in the region.
Who’s in the Crosshairs
East Siang, Lohit, Namsai and Longding districts are expected to receive heavy rainfall — roughly 6 to 11 centimetres within a 24-hour window — at isolated places on Thursday and Friday, alongside thunderstorms and lightning. But the district that should be watching the skies most nervously right now is Papum Pare. IMD has predicted very heavy rainfall there — up to 20 centimetres in 24 hours — during the same period, with the intense downpour expected to continue into Saturday. That kind of volume is not just rain. That’s flash flood territory. Lower Subansiri, Lower Dibang Valley and Lohit are also in the forecast for heavy showers and thunderstorms on Friday and Saturday.
A State Already on Its Knees
Here’s the thing — this warning doesn’t land on a blank slate. Arunachal Pradesh has been taking hit after hit this monsoon season. Floods and landslides have already claimed seven lives, injured 29 people, and displaced or affected nearly 1,49,392 people across the state. Every one of those is a real person — a family, a home, a story. All 27 districts have been impacted, spanning 343 administrative circles and 594 villages. No corner of the state has been spared.
The Damage Running Into the Ground
The numbers on infrastructure are staggering — and they keep growing. So far, 198 roads, 38 bridges, 30 culverts, 265 water supply schemes, 156 power lines, 239 electric poles, 63 government buildings, 24 schools, 46 fish ponds, 21 retaining walls and 16 flood protection walls have been damaged. Roads and bridges are the lifeline of a mountainous state like Arunachal, and losing them doesn’t just mean inconvenience — it cuts communities off entirely. On the agriculture front, 733.66 hectares of crop area have been reported damaged, including 419 hectares of horticulture plantations and 314.66 hectares of agricultural land, with 1,010 hectares of forest area also impacted. Farmers who spent months nurturing their fields are watching it all wash away.

The IMD has advised residents, commuters and district authorities to take necessary precautions and stay vigilant, as the adverse weather could trigger flash floods, landslides and further damage to infrastructure. That’s the official word. The practical word? Don’t wait for the water to come to your door. Stay away from riverbanks and unstable slopes, keep emergency contacts ready, and listen to local authorities. Two days may not sound like much, but in the hills of Arunachal, two days of relentless rain can change everything.
This monsoon has already taken too much from this state. As the clouds gather again, the only thing Arunachal Pradesh can afford to do right now is prepare — because the sky has made it very clear it isn’t finished yet.
