When was the last time a doctor came to your doorstep? For most people living in the remote villages of Lower Dibang Valley, that answer is rarely — if ever. That changed this week when the RIWATCH Arogya Centre rolled up its sleeves and took healthcare directly to two villages that need it most.
Doctors on the Move
The RIWATCH Arogya Centre conducted two free medical camps in Abango and Horupahar villages in Lower Dibang Valley district on 27 and 29 July, respectively. The initiative wasn’t a one-off photo opportunity. The camps formed part of the centre’s ongoing outreach effort to extend quality healthcare and Ayurvedic wellness services to remote and underserved communities of the district. That word — ongoing — matters. It tells you this isn’t charity for the cameras. It’s a commitment.
Who Showed Up and What They Found
The camps were led by RIWATCH Arogya Centre Medical Officer Dr Techi Yumyi, along with her team. Villagers received free medical consultation and health check-ups, and Ayurvedic medicines were distributed to patients free of cost. At the first stop in Abango, the turnout was modest but telling. Eight patients came forward — five males and three females — and most presented with common complaints of knee and back pain. These are the kinds of chronic conditions that grind people down quietly for years when there’s no one nearby to treat them. By the time the team reached Horupahar two days later, word had clearly spread. Thirty-one patients came forward for treatment at the second camp, bringing the total to 39 patients treated across both villages, with an overall footfall of 50 participants including community members who attended health awareness sessions.
Ancient Medicine, Modern Outreach
What makes this initiative stand out isn’t just the headcount — it’s the approach. Dr Yumyi took time to explain the benefits of Panchakarma therapy to patients and participants, highlighting its role in preventive healthcare, pain management, and overall wellbeing, while assuring them it is effective and free from side effects. For communities that have long depended on traditional knowledge but rarely had access to formal Ayurvedic guidance, this kind of conversation carries real weight. Patients were also counselled on adopting a healthy lifestyle and maintaining a proper, balanced diet as part of long-term wellness. Simple advice, but advice that sticks when delivered by someone who came all the way to your village to give it.
Why It Matters
There are thousands of villages across Arunachal Pradesh where a single visit from a medical team can shift the entire conversation around health. People stop ignoring pain. They start asking questions. They begin to believe that care is something meant for them too — not just for those lucky enough to live near a hospital. That shift in belief may be the most powerful medicine of all. The RIWATCH Arogya Centre’s camps didn’t just treat 39 patients. They showed an entire community that someone gives a damn.
