Arunachal Pradesh Police cracked open what appears to be an organised vehicle theft network on Monday, arresting six individuals — including two minors — and recovering 11 stolen two-wheelers from the Nirjuli area of the Itanagar Capital Region. It’s the kind of operation that reminds you how much goes on behind the scenes before police can make a single arrest, let alone eleven recoveries.
A Coordinated Hunt, Not a Lucky Break
This wasn’t a stumbled-upon bust. According to Naharlagun Superintendent of Police Nyelam Nega, two dedicated investigation teams were put on the case — one led by Sub-Inspector Topi Josam and the other by Sub-Inspector Gopal Tok. These teams spent considerable time running coordinated field operations, collecting intelligence inputs, and deploying technical surveillance to zero in on the accused. The entire operation was supervised by ASP Rishi Longdo and Nirjuli Police Station Officer-in-Charge, Inspector Tadu Hassang. In other words, a lot of people worked quietly for this result to happen.
Minors in the Mix — A Disturbing Detail
What makes this case particularly unsettling is the involvement of two children among those apprehended. Their identities are being withheld given their age, but their alleged links to the theft network raise uncomfortable questions. How deep does this ring go? Who else might be connected? Police say the investigation is actively ongoing — they’re probing whether the group is linked to other vehicle theft incidents and whether more stolen property is still out in the field. The theft case has been registered at Nirjuli Police Station under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Four adult accused have been formally arrested, with the two minors handled separately as per applicable law. The legal process is now in motion, and authorities appear determined not to let this end at just six arrests.

SP Nyelam Nega didn’t just stop at announcing the recovery. He made a direct appeal to residents — if your two-wheeler was stolen in recent months, head to either the SDPO Naharlagun or Nirjuli Police Station with valid ownership documents to check whether your vehicle is among the 11 recovered. He also urged people to be more careful about where and how they park, especially at night. It’s a simple reminder, but in a city where bike theft has clearly been more organised than many realised, it’s one worth heeding.
If this operation proves anything, it’s that vehicle theft in Itanagar isn’t always a random crime of opportunity — and cracking it wide open may have only just begun.
