Arunachal Dy CM Hails 1,000 MW Milestone at Subansiri Lower Hydropower Project

Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein has congratulated NHPC Limited on achieving a major engineering feat, as the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project crossed the 1,000 MW operational capacity mark with the successful commissioning of its fourth unit.

Mein, who also oversees the Power and Hydro Power departments, extended his appreciation on May 10 to the engineers, technicians, workers, and all stakeholders involved in the project. He described the milestone as a significant step forward in India’s pursuit of clean, sustainable, and self-reliant energy production.

The 250 MW Unit 4 began commercial operations on May 8, bringing the total commissioned capacity of the project to 1,000 MW. The massive 2,000 MW venture, located on the Subansiri River along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border, consists of eight units of 250 MW each and is recognised as India’s largest hydropower initiative.

In his statement, the Deputy Chief Minister praised the team for overcoming various operational and logistical hurdles to reach this landmark. He highlighted how such achievements strengthen the nation’s commitment to renewable energy and support long-term energy security, especially in the Northeast region.

Once fully operational, the Subansiri Lower project is expected to significantly boost power availability across the northeastern states and contribute meaningfully to India’s clean energy targets. The development assumes greater importance as the region seeks to harness its vast hydropower potential responsibly while addressing growing electricity demand.

The project had earlier faced prolonged delays due to environmental and social concerns before construction resumed in 2019. In recent months, it has witnessed steady progress, including the installation of India’s heaviest hydro rotor for Unit 5 earlier this year.

Chowna Mein’s remarks underscore the state government’s strong support for responsible hydropower development that balances energy generation with sustainable practices and local aspirations.

This latest achievement at Subansiri Lower reinforces Arunachal Pradesh’s emergence as a key player in India’s renewable energy landscape and brings renewed optimism for the timely completion of the remaining units.
