In a significant step towards regional development, residents of six villages in Tuting subdivision of Arunachal Pradesh have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the proposed Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP), marking a key milestone in community participation for large-scale infrastructure.
Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu welcomed the agreement on May 8, describing it as a historic and visionary decision that paves the way for progress while respecting local aspirations. The villages — Ningging, Rising, Ngaming, Zido, Angging, and Singging — came together to formally support the project, reflecting strong community consensus.
In a statement on social media, CM Khandu praised the move as a shining example of collective wisdom and unity. He highlighted how local communities have prioritised the larger interests of growth and nation-building. The Chief Minister extended gratitude to the villagers, traditional leaders, and all stakeholders for placing their trust in this development initiative.
The Siang Upper Multipurpose Project is expected to unlock substantial economic opportunities for Upper Siang district and surrounding areas. Once realised, it promises to generate employment, improve infrastructure, boost tourism potential, and bring overall prosperity to one of the state’s strategically important regions.
Officials view this MoU as a crucial confidence-building measure that demonstrates the willingness of local residents to partner with the government for sustainable development. Such community endorsements are considered vital for the smooth implementation of major hydel and multipurpose projects in ecologically sensitive and culturally rich parts of Arunachal Pradesh.
CM Khandu expressed optimism that the project would deliver long-term benefits, including better connectivity, enhanced livelihood options, and improved quality of life for the people living along the Siang river basin. He reiterated the state government’s commitment to ensuring inclusive growth that balances development with environmental safeguards and respect for indigenous rights.
This development comes as Arunachal Pradesh continues to harness its vast hydropower potential responsibly, aiming to emerge as a key contributor to India’s clean energy goals while uplifting remote frontier communities.
