Two ULFA (I) Cadres Surrender Before Security Forces at Arunachal’s Pangsau Pass

Itanagar: In a significant boost to counter-insurgency efforts in the Northeast, two active cadres of the banned United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) [ULFA (I)] surrendered before security forces at Pangsau Pass in Arunachal Pradesh on the night of May 5, 2026.

The surrendered militants were identified as Lekang Axom alias Ashok Sonowal (31), an SS Corporal from Mahadevpur in Arunachal Pradesh, and Nipen Axom alias Biplav Buragohain (31), an SS Lance Corporal from Gohaingaon in Assam’s Dhemaji district.

According to officials, both cadres deserted the outfit’s General Headquarters at Ranu on May 3. They travelled on foot through difficult terrain before reaching the Pangsau security post, where they laid down arms and formally surrendered.

Security agencies have begun questioning the duo to gather vital intelligence on ULFA (I)’s current operational strength, activities, and movements along the India-Myanmar border.

This surrender is viewed as an encouraging development amid sustained operations by security forces to dismantle insurgent networks and encourage cadres to join the mainstream. Pangsau Pass, located in Changlang district near the Indo-Myanmar border, has historically been a sensitive area for security-related incidents.
