Taxi Driver from West Bengal Stabbed to Death in Tawang Altercation; Accused Arrested Within Hours

Tawang: A taxi driver from West Bengal was allegedly stabbed to death during a late-night altercation in Arunachal Pradesh’s Tawang district, police said on May 5, 2026.

The victim, identified as Akash Lama (36), originally hailed from Jalpaiguri district in West Bengal and had been living in Tawang for several years. The accused, Pema Wangchu (25), a resident of Dungse in Jang, was also a taxi driver in the area and reportedly knew the victim.

The incident occurred on the night of May 4 near Nehru Market, close to the Post Office in Tawang. CCTV footage captured a heated argument between the two men shortly before the stabbing. Police recovered a dagger, believed to belong to the victim, from the spot during an intensive search.

Tawang Police acted swiftly under the supervision of Superintendent of Police Tasi Darang. A team led by Deputy Superintendent of Police Tasso Kato and Inspector Niyi Angu apprehended the accused in the early hours of May 5.

A case has been registered at Tawang Police Station under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Further investigation is underway.

The incident has caused concern among local residents and the transport community in Tawang. Police have appealed for calm while assuring strict action against those involved in such crimes.
