Arunachal Designer Yajir Mara Elevates Tribal Textiles to Seoul’s International Runway

Yajir Mara’s Fusion of Handwoven Fabrics and Contemporary Silhouettes Captivates Global Audiences, Spotlights Northeast Artisan Craftsmanship and Cultural Legacy

Arunachal Pradesh’s vibrant textile traditions have woven their way onto the world stage, thanks to visionary designer Yajir Mara, whose captivating collection graced the 21st “Celebrating India” cultural fashion extravaganza in Seoul, South Korea. As India’s proud representative, Mara masterfully fused age-old tribal patterns with sleek modern aesthetics, embodying her signature ethos of “Weaving Heritage into Modern Elegance” and igniting applause for the Northeast’s timeless artistry.

Held at the prestigious Textile Center in Gangnam on November 6-7, the event transformed into a mesmerizing tapestry of cultural exchange, curated by the North East Institute of Fashion Technology (NEIFT) in partnership with the Embassy of India in Seoul, the Indian Chamber of Commerce in Korea, and the Korea Federation of Textile Industries (KOFOTI). Mara’s runway revelation spotlighted Arunachal’s intricate handlooms—vibrant motifs drawn from indigenous communities—reimagined into empowering ensembles that bridge generations and geographies.

Stealing the finale spotlight was Miss Arunachal Taba Jumshi, whose poised strut as the showstopper infused the presentation with an authentic essence of regional pride and resilience, turning heads and hearts alike. The collection’s debut not only celebrated the meticulous labor of local weavers but also flung open gateways for global acclaim, positioning Arunachal’s artisans as beacons of sustainable, story-rich fashion.

The occasion brimmed with influential backing from Arunachal’s leadership, featuring Industries, Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, Textiles & Handicrafts, and Trade & Commerce Minister Nyato Dukam; alongside Law, Legislative & Justice, Social Justice, Empowerment & Tribal Affairs, and Sports & Youth Minister Kento Jini. High-ranking officials like Textiles & Handicrafts Commissioner Mamung Tayeng and Director Dorjee Phuntso lent their steadfast endorsement, underscoring the government’s drive to amplify Northeast handicrafts on international canvases.

NEIFT CEO and Festival Director Vikram Rai Medhi showered praise on Mara’s trailblazing vision, hailing her as a catalyst for elevating the region’s weaving lore to cosmopolitan heights. Through this Seoul showcase, Mara has not only draped Arunachal’s soul in global glamour but also sparked a renaissance for ethical fashion rooted in cultural authenticity and innovative spirit.
