Manipur Witnesses Voluntary Surrender of Large Arms Stockpile in Imphal Districts

Imphal, February 23, 2025 – A significant step toward peace unfolded in Manipur as communities in Imphal East and Imphal West districts voluntarily handed over a substantial collection of weapons and ammunition on Saturday. This development follows a recent appeal by Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, urging residents to surrender illegally held arms to restore stability in the state.

The surrendered arsenal included an array of sophisticated firearms and explosives, reflecting a collective effort to de-escalate tensions. Among the items turned in were two Self-Loading Rifles (SLRs), two AK-series rifles, three INSAS rifles, an M-16 rifle, and a 9mm carbine machine gun. Additionally, the haul featured a 51mm mortar, three .303 rifles, two single-barrel rifles, and two M-79 40mm Under Barrel Grenade Launchers (UBGLs), alongside a significant quantity of ammunition and two improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

The initiative gained momentum after collaborative efforts by the Assam Rifles, Manipur Police, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and state administration, who engaged with local leaders to address security concerns and promote disarmament. In Churachandpur’s Tuibong village, 16 weapons were surrendered, marking a notable contribution from the tribal-dominated area. Meanwhile, in Imphal East, additional recoveries included hand grenades and pistols, signaling widespread participation across districts.

Governor Bhalla’s call for surrender within a seven-day window, issued earlier this week, warned of strict repercussions for non-compliance. The response highlights a growing willingness among residents to support the peace process, which has been a priority amid the state’s ethnic unrest since May 2023. Security forces continue their efforts to recover remaining looted arms, with this surrender marking a hopeful stride toward normalcy in Manipur.
