On January 6, 2025, the Indian Army deployed a specialized Relief Task Force to rescue miners trapped in a coal mine in Umrangso, a remote industrial town in Assam’s Dima Hasao district.

Deployment of STask Force

Responding to an urgent request from Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Indian Army assembled a highly skilled team comprising divers, engineers, and trained rescue personnel. Equipped with advanced tools and resources, the task force operates under the guidance of a senior officer to ensure the mission’s success. The operation has been meticulously planned to address the delicate and time-sensitive nature of the rescue effort.

Coordination with Civil Authorities

Authorities are maintaining close coordination with the civil administration to receive real-time updates and facilitate a swift resolution to the crisis. Chief Minister Sarma shared a list of laborers trapped in the coal mine and expressed his concern on social media, stating, “Distressing news from Umrangso, where laborers are trapped in a coal mine. The exact number and status are yet unknown. Praying to God for everyone’s safety.” He also confirmed that the Army’s assistance has been sought to bolster the rescue operations.

Details of the Incident

The incident occurred at a coal mine in the 3 Kilo area of Umrangso, near the Meghalaya border. The mine, approximately 300 feet deep, experienced sudden flooding, causing water levels to rise up to 100 feet and trapping several laborers. Rescue teams, including the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and local authorities, are racing against time to save the trapped workers. Despite their efforts, the flooding has made the mission perilous and complex.

Ongoing Rescue Efforts

The combined efforts of the Indian Army, SDRF, NDRF, and local authorities underscore the commitment to rescuing the trapped miners. The situation remains critical, and authorities are working tirelessly to ensure the safety and well-being of the laborers involved.
