Delhi Influencer’s Racial Abuse of Tripura Man Sparks Outrage

A viral video of a Delhi creator racially abusing a Tripura youth has sparked outrage, with Kiren Rijiju demanding action and Tripura Police filing a complaint.

A massive row has erupted after a video went viral showing a Delhi-based content creator harassing a young man from Tripura and passing racial slurs at him. The footage has triggered widespread outrage, with Union Minister Kiren Rijiju reacting sharply and directing authorities to take strict action against the creator.

Apology Issued, Police Complaint Filed

The creator, identified in reports as Amir Shokeen, has since issued an apology after the video drew condemnation. The Tripura Police have filed a complaint in the matter, according to the report. Several groups from the Northeast, along with the Union Minister, have sought strict action — underlining how seriously the incident is being taken across the region.

Not an Isolated Case

The incident fits a recurring pattern. People from the Northeast have repeatedly faced discrimination and violence in the northern states, particularly in Delhi, where their appearance often becomes the target of abuse. Rights groups have long argued that such incidents reflect a deeper prejudice that surfaces in everyday interactions — from rented accommodation to public transport.

Among recent cases cited in the report is the killing of Vikram Singh, a 55-year-old musician and singer from Manipur, who was beaten to death by a group of men in Delhi’s Ashram area following a dispute over loud noise. The case drew attention from several prominent politicians, including Lok Sabha Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi. The Delhi Police registered an FIR and arrested eight individuals, including food delivery workers, according to the report.

In another case, Arun Rimo, a youth from Arunachal Pradesh, was brutally assaulted by a group of men in Delhi’s Karol Bagh area after he objected to racial slurs, as per reports. Three young women from Arunachal Pradesh also accused neighbours in Delhi’s Malviya Nagar of physical assault and racial abuse, alleging the remarks were a direct attack on the appearance of Northeastern people. Arunachal women faced similar abuse at a Patna hospital in another reported case that sparked outrage across the Northeast.

Outrage Grows, Questions Remain

Leaders from across parties have criticised these incidents and demanded firm action. Yet the latest video shows that people from the Northeast continue to face hostility in the national capital — reopening wider conversations about identity and belonging that cut across the region. For now, the focus is on whether the complaint filed by the Tripura Police leads to concrete action — and whether this outrage translates into lasting change.
