Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Polish counterpart Donald Tusk held wide-ranging talks at Hyderabad House in New Delhi, agreeing to work together to double bilateral trade by 2030 and to open new avenues of cooperation across strategic sectors. The meeting, held during Tusk’s three-day official visit, marked a new phase in the partnership the two countries established in 2024, according to the Ministry of External Affairs.
Defence, Space, Nuclear Energy in Focus
The two leaders explored new cooperation in artificial intelligence, green technologies, critical minerals and defence, while resolving to deepen ties in trade, investment, education, culture and people-to-people exchanges. Modi invited Polish companies to engage in co-development and co-production with Indian partners across strategic areas including defence, space and nuclear energy. Poland’s expertise in critical minerals and coal gasification was identified as a promising area for partnership, with both sides underlining the potential of cooperation in the shipping industry and maritime security. The leaders also recognised the importance of cooperation between ports and highlighted enhanced connectivity, including via the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), according to the joint statement — echoing India’s growing infrastructure partnerships across Asia.
Trade Target and the India-EU FTA
Bilateral trade between the two countries has recorded steady growth over the past decade, and the new 2030 target is intended to open more opportunities for businesses on both sides. The leaders underscored the importance of the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement, describing it as a mechanism set to unlock new opportunities for businesses and industries and give fresh impetus to economic engagement.
Ukraine, West Asia and Global Institutions
Modi and Tusk also discussed regional and global developments, with Modi reaffirming India’s support for every meaningful effort towards peace in Ukraine and West Asia. The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to a rules-based international order and the reform of global institutions, including the UN Security Council. India’s diplomatic attention on West Asia has also been visible closer home in recent days. Tusk is accompanied by a high-level business delegation, and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also called on the Polish Prime Minister to discuss deepening cooperation across a wide range of domains.
