Tucked into a hillside near Daporijo in Arunachal Pradesh’s Upper Subansiri district, Menga Mandir — also known as the Meghna Cave Temple — is a natural rock cave shrine that draws devotees of Lord Shiva from across the region. A flight of stairs climbs the hill to the shrine, where a naturally formed Shiva Lingam sits deep inside the cave.
The cave and its shrine
The temple’s most striking features are its narrow underground passages. The cave holds two dark interior tunnels, and one entrance begins wide before narrowing so sharply that devotees must crawl to move further inside. The confined rock formations give the shrine a distinctive character that devotees describe as deeply meditative.
A large natural stalagmite within the cave is revered as a Svayambhu Shiva Lingam — a self-manifested representation of the deity — making the site especially significant for Shaivite worshippers. Visitors offer prayers in the dimly lit cavern, experiencing the temple’s unusual natural architecture as part of the ritual itself.
Worshipped as Lakulisha
Inside the cave, Lord Shiva is worshipped as Lakulisha, regarded in Shaivite tradition as his 28th incarnation. The presence of inscriptions described as references to ancient Sanskrit scriptures associated with the Kali Purana adds to the shrine’s religious and historical weight, linking the site to centuries of sacred tradition in the eastern Himalayas.
A legacy five millennia deep
Regional records suggest the cave is believed to be around 5,000 years old and was rediscovered in 1962, giving the modest hillside shrine an extraordinary antiquity. For pilgrims and heritage travellers alike, Menga Mandir stands as one of Arunachal Pradesh’s most atmospheric places of worship — a natural temple where geology and devotion meet.
The shrine continues to attract devotees who come to offer prayers and experience its singular natural formations. Its growing profile also adds to the momentum behind Arunachal’s pilgrimage and heritage tourism, which has seen students and travellers journey as far as the shores of Somnath in recent outreach efforts. Efforts to protect the state’s sacred sites have also made headlines, as in the case of Arunachal police’s swift recovery of stolen temple heritage bells.
