Guwahati’s first VFS Global visa application centre has opened its doors, giving travellers across India’s eight northeastern states access to 14 countries — and cutting the need for costly trips to distant metro hubs for visa processing.
What the Centre Offers
The 3,200-square-foot facility at ISBT Khanapara will handle applications for destinations including Austria, France, Italy, Japan, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, while also accepting Schengen requests that can cover 29 European countries. For applicants in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim, the centre removes a major logistical hurdle that has long added time and expense to studying abroad, business travel and tourism.
Why It Matters
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the facility should ease the burden on applicants who previously had to travel to far-off cities for visa services. He stressed that VFS only processes applications — final approvals still rest with governments and diplomatic missions.
The choice of Guwahati reflects the city’s role as the Northeast’s main air, rail and road hub, and lands alongside new flight links out of Guwahati and the region’s push for better air connectivity. With rising outbound travel demand for education, business and tourism, easier global mobility is fast becoming an economic question for the region.
VFS’s India Footprint
The opening fits VFS Global’s broader expansion in India. The Zurich- and Dubai-headquartered company says it now works with 53 governments through 561 centres across 20 Indian cities, and is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. Majority-owned by Blackstone, VFS has built its business around outsourced visa and consular processing.
