IndiGo has started direct flights between Guwahati and Itanagar, giving Arunachal Pradesh its strongest air link yet with the Northeast’s principal aviation hub.
The service is currently operating six days a week, from Monday to Saturday, and will move to daily operations from October 25. The roughly hour-long hop connects Guwahati with Donyi Polo Airport at Hollongi, near Itanagar.
The expansion was communicated by IndiGo’s Senior Manager (Sales) for Eastern India, Sagar Bhattacharjee, to the Arunachal Chamber of Commerce and Industries (ACCI), which had long pushed for better flight frequency on the sector.
Boost for Trade, Tourism and Healthcare
Business groups say the additional capacity will ease travel for traders, government officials, students and patients who regularly travel to Guwahati for medical treatment. Tourism operators also expect the route to bring more visitors to the state.
ACCI president Dr. Tarh Nachung welcomed the move. “The increased flight frequency will significantly improve connectivity, facilitate trade and tourism, and provide greater convenience to the people of Arunachal Pradesh,” he said, adding that seamless links through Guwahati would strengthen the state’s access to the rest of the country.
Part of a Wider Network Push
The Guwahati–Itanagar expansion is part of IndiGo’s broader effort to connect state capitals and remote regions with its national network. Guwahati serves as the main gateway for the Northeast, and direct capacity on this sector reduces dependence on longer road journeys and connecting flights.
Regular schedules show the non-stop flight taking under an hour each way, making day trips between the two cities practical for the first time on a commercial carrier.
