The Northeast’s first visa application centre is now live in Guwahati, giving residents of all eight northeastern states a local option for international travel documentation for the first time. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the facility, which is operated by VFS Global.
14 Countries, One Roof
The centre accepts visa applications for Austria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Estonia, France, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Malta, Morocco, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Travellers heading abroad for tourism, higher education or business can use these services without travelling to faraway metros.
Who Was There
Tourism Minister Ajanta Neog and Transport Minister Charan Boro joined the inauguration ceremony, along with Yusmi Talwar, VFS Global’s chief executive officer for South Asia. Diplomats from Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Italy and France were also present, underlining the multilateral interest in the new facility.
Why Guwahati
Guwahati is the Northeast’s largest urban centre and its main rail, road and air junction, which makes it the natural home for a facility meant to serve all eight states of the region. Before this, applicants from the Northeast typically had to travel to metros such as Delhi, Mumbai or Kolkata to submit visa paperwork, adding the cost of an extra domestic trip to already-expensive international travel. For students chasing admission deadlines, families planning holidays and business travellers, the local centre removes a significant bottleneck. The launch is also timed for the festive and year-end travel season, when outbound demand traditionally spikes.
Decisions Stay With the Countries
VFS Global has clarified that the centre will only facilitate the application process — decisions on granting or rejecting visas will remain with the respective countries and their authorised authorities. Applicants are advised to verify documentation requirements, appointment procedures and service charges through authorised VFS Global channels before visiting. The opening fits a broader shift of pulling consular and administrative infrastructure beyond the Delhi-Mumbai-Kolkata triangle, and it strengthens Guwahati’s standing as the Northeast’s gateway city — a role also seen in moves like IndiGo’s new daily Guwahati-Itanagar flights improving regional connectivity. Guwahati’s rise as the region’s anchor also mirrors the political weight the city carries, from key Northeast peace discussions routed through Delhi to Assam’s role in regional alliances.
