A quiet Sunday evening near the Circuit House in Namsai turned anything but ordinary on August 3, when police moved in and took down what they believe is an active drug trafficking network — netting four accused, suspected heroin, and tens of thousands of rupees in alleged dirty money.
The Tip That Set It All in Motion
It started with credible intelligence. Namsai Police had been receiving inputs about drug peddling activity concentrated near the Circuit House area, and at around 6:45 PM, they decided to act. The operation was led on the ground by Deputy Superintendent of Police Kengo Dirchi, SDPO Namsai, who moved in with his team backed by members of the All Namsai Area Youth Association (ANAYA) — a detail worth noting, because community involvement in anti-drug operations like this signals something important: local youth themselves have had enough of this menace. The entire operation was conducted under the overall supervision of Superintendent of Police Sangey Thinley.
Four Arrested — One a Familiar Face
Police rounded up four individuals during the raid. Chow Nakalan Mein, 40, a resident of Jenglai under Piyong Circle, was among them — and he is no stranger to these situations. He has been arrested on at least three previous occasions under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, making him, by any measure, a habitual offender. The other three arrested were Gopal Chetry, 40, of Piyong Circle; Suresh Gour, 37, and Janu Urang, 28, both residents of Piyong Adivasi Village. All four have been formally arrested and a case registered against them under Sections 21(b), 27A, and 29 of the NDPS Act.
What Police Found
Following the mandatory legal provisions under the NDPS Act, the police team recovered 60 grams (gross weight) of suspected heroin — with a net weight of 9 grams — along with ₹61,440 in cash believed to be direct proceeds of drug trafficking. The haul also included 20 disposable syringes and two lighters. A seizure memo was drawn up in the presence of independent witnesses, following due procedure. It may be a relatively modest quantity in absolute terms, but when you consider the syringes and cash alongside a repeat peddler, the picture painted is of an organised, functioning supply chain — not a one-time lapse.
Digging Deeper: The Investigation Continues
The arrests are only the beginning. Namsai Police have made it clear that they are now focused on tracing where the heroin came from, mapping the financial trail connected to the alleged trafficking, and identifying others who may be part of the larger network. The public has been urged to come forward with any information, with police assuring complete confidentiality for informants — an assurance that, if taken seriously by residents, could prove invaluable in cutting deeper into the supply chain.
