The rivers have taken too much. And this time, the elected representatives of Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland weren’t going to wait for paperwork to travel slowly through bureaucratic corridors.
On July 30, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, Arunachal Pradesh MP Tapir Gao, and several other parliamentarians from the two northeastern states walked into Parliament and sat down with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to talk about something that demands urgent attention — the devastating floods that have torn through communities, washed away bridges, and left thousands scrambling for survival across the region.
Losses That Go Beyond Numbers
The scale of destruction is hard to compress into a meeting. Lives lost. Homes reduced to rubble. Livestock gone overnight. Roads and bridges — the lifelines of these mountainous, remote states — either cracked or completely swept away. The MPs highlighted the loss of lives and widespread damage to homes, livestock, roads, bridges, and other public infrastructure caused by the floods. Anyone who has travelled through Arunachal or Nagaland knows just how catastrophic it is when a single bridge collapses — entire villages get cut off, sometimes for weeks.
The Assessment Is Done. Now Release the Money.
What the MPs made clear is that the groundwork has already been laid. A central team had already visited the flood-affected areas to assess the extent of the damage, and the governments of both Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh have submitted their recommendations detailing losses — including damage to property, livestock, roads, and bridges — along with the central team’s assessment report. So the data is there. The documentation is there. The suffering is undeniable. What’s needed now is action, not more assessment.
Tapir Gao Speaks Out
Speaking after the meeting, MP Tapir Gao said the MPs requested the Prime Minister to ensure the early release of funds to help the affected states undertake relief and reconstruction work. “We urged the Prime Minister to expedite the release of funds, and he has assured us that the matter will be resolved quickly,” Gao said. That assurance matters. But for people still living in temporary shelters, words need to turn into action fast.
A Pattern the Northeast Knows Too Well
The meeting comes amid widespread flood-related devastation across several northeastern states, including Assam, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh. This is not a new story for this part of India. Every monsoon season, the Northeast braces itself. And every year, the conversation about adequate central support, faster disaster response, and resilient infrastructure starts again. PM Modi assured the delegation of all possible support from the Centre.
The Northeast has been patient. Patient through floods, through landslides, through years of asking for infrastructure that matches its terrain. The MPs did the right thing by knocking on the Prime Minister’s door directly. Now the ball is in New Delhi’s court — and the clock is ticking.
