Thembang (West Kameng): The much-awaited Thembang Heritage Festival 2026 was inaugurated with great enthusiasm and traditional fervour on April 18 at Thembang village in West Kameng district.
The three-day festival, organised by the Thembang Bapu Welfare Society in collaboration with the district administration, aims to celebrate and preserve the rich cultural heritage, traditions, and indigenous identity of the Monpa community.
Chief Minister Pema Khandu sent his best wishes for the success of the festival. In his message, he described Thembang as one of the most beautiful and culturally significant villages in Arunachal Pradesh and praised the initiative for promoting eco-cultural tourism while preserving traditional knowledge and practices.
The inaugural day featured colourful cultural performances, traditional Monpa dances, folk songs, and exhibitions showcasing local handicrafts, handloom products, and indigenous cuisine. A large number of tourists, dignitaries, and locals attended the event.
The festival also includes trekking to nearby heritage sites, traditional sports competitions, and interactive sessions on Monpa history and lifestyle. Organisers have laid special emphasis on sustainable tourism and responsible visitor behaviour to protect the fragile Himalayan ecology.
Thembang Heritage Festival has emerged as an important annual event that not only promotes cultural pride among the younger generation but also boosts rural tourism and local economy in the border district of West Kameng.
The festival will continue till April 20, 2026.
