Itanagar: In a moving show of solidarity and grief, thousands of people from all walks of life participated in a massive candlelight rally in Itanagar on the evening of April 9 to pay tribute to Yapi Potom, the young government school teacher who was brutally murdered on April 5.
The rally began from the Vivekananda Kendra and wound its way through the main streets of the capital complex. Participants, including students, teachers, civil society members, women’s organisations, and common citizens, walked silently holding lighted candles and placards demanding justice for the deceased teacher.
Yapi Potom, a dedicated educator posted in Upper Subansiri district, was allegedly killed by her husband and his family members. The shocking incident has triggered widespread outrage and sorrow across Arunachal Pradesh.
During the rally, speakers strongly condemned rising cases of violence against women and called for swift justice. Many participants raised slogans demanding strict punishment for the accused and better safety measures for women in the state.
The rally concluded with a prayer meeting and a minute of silence in memory of Yapi Potom. Candles were lit in large numbers, creating an emotional and poignant scene in the heart of Itanagar.
The large turnout reflected the collective anger and demand for justice, while also highlighting growing concern over women’s safety and domestic violence in Arunachal Pradesh.
