Patna: A group of young women from Arunachal Pradesh faced humiliating racial discrimination at a government hospital in Patna, Bihar, after being stopped from using a public washroom and subjected to derogatory slurs. The disturbing incident, captured on video on April 2, has gone viral and triggered widespread anger across the Northeast.
In the footage, a hospital attendant in uniform is seen blocking the women’s entry to the washroom and demanding identity proof. When the women questioned the unusual demand, the attendant allegedly laughed and used racist remarks such as “Momo”, “Chinki”, and “Chinese”. One of the victims recorded the entire episode and expressed her disappointment, saying, “We come from the Northeast to travel, but because of incidents like this, we are scared.”
The video has evoked strong condemnation from people across Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Nagaland, and other northeastern states, who see it as yet another example of deep-rooted racial bias faced by people from the region in mainland India.
This incident comes close on the heels of a similar case in February 2026, when three Arunachalee women were racially abused by a neighbour in Delhi’s Malviya Nagar. Such repeated episodes have once again highlighted the persistent challenges and discrimination faced by northeastern citizens while travelling, studying, or working in other parts of the country.
Many have called upon authorities in Bihar to take strict action against the hospital staff involved and ensure better sensitisation of public service employees regarding cultural diversity and dignity of citizens.
The video has sparked renewed demands for greater awareness campaigns and stricter measures against racial discrimination to make other parts of India more inclusive for people from the Northeast.
