Three New Rove Beetle Species Discovered in Arunachal Pradesh, Adding to Eastern Himalayan Biodiversity

Itanagar: In a remarkable scientific breakthrough, researchers have discovered three new species of rove beetles in Arunachal Pradesh, significantly enhancing the documented insect diversity of the Eastern Himalayas.

The newly identified species belong to the genus Megalopsilus. They have been named:

  • Megalopsilus arunachalensis
  • Megalopsilus mithun
  • Megalopsilus microglossus

The discovery was made through a joint research effort between Rajiv Gandhi University (RGU), Arunachal Pradesh, and the University of Tübingen, Germany. The findings were published in the reputed international journal Soil Organisms.

The research team comprised Hiren Gogoi, Tagan Dobiam, and Sonu Singh from Rajiv Gandhi University, along with German scientists Professor Oliver Betz and Tobias Mainda.

These beetles were collected from moist leaf litter and decaying wood in forest ecosystems, primarily from two biodiversity-rich protected areas — Pakke Tiger Reserve and Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary. Such habitats play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance.

Arunachal Pradesh continues to surprise scientists with its rich and largely unexplored insect diversity. Researchers believe many more unknown species are likely to be discovered with sustained exploration and study in the state.

Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein welcomed the discovery, stating that it highlights the extraordinary natural wealth and ecological importance of Arunachal Pradesh. He stressed the need for strong conservation measures to protect these fragile ecosystems and the rare species they harbour.

The discovery underscores the Eastern Himalayan region’s status as one of the world’s most important biodiversity hotspots and emphasises the urgent need for continued research and habitat preservation.
