Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project Achieves Key Milestone with Wet Commissioning of Unit 4

Itanagar/Dhemaji: The 2,000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project (SLHEP), India’s largest under-construction hydropower project, has achieved a significant milestone with the beginning of wet commissioning of its Unit 4 (250 MW) on April 1, 2026.

NHPC Limited, the project executing agency, confirmed that wet commissioning — a critical testing phase involving water flow through the turbine and generator — has commenced successfully. This follows the successful completion of dry commissioning and system integration checks.

Once fully tested and synchronised with the grid, Unit 4 will add 250 MW of clean renewable energy to the national power grid. Three other units are already at advanced stages of testing, indicating steady progress toward full project commissioning.

Located on the Subansiri River along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border, the mega project is expected to play a transformative role in strengthening India’s renewable energy capacity and boosting power availability in the Northeast region.

Chief Minister Pema Khandu and NHPC officials have expressed satisfaction with the progress. The project is also expected to generate substantial direct and indirect employment, improve local infrastructure, and provide revenue to both Arunachal Pradesh and Assam.

The Subansiri Lower project has been a long-awaited initiative for the region. Its successful commissioning in phases will mark a major achievement in harnessing the vast hydropower potential of Arunachal Pradesh, often referred to as the “Power House of India.”
