Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has welcomed the dual achievement of the Donyi Polo Airport at Itanagar, describing it as a historic milestone that will significantly boost air connectivity and economic development in the state and the entire Northeast region.
The airport has received two major recognitions recently:
- International Airport Status – Granted by the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India.
- Customs Notification – Issued for handling international cargo and passenger services.
CM Pema Khandu expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu for this important development. In a social media post, he stated:
“This is a proud moment for Arunachal Pradesh. The Donyi Polo Airport in Itanagar receiving international status along with customs notification is a game changer for our state. It will open new doors for tourism, trade, and people-to-people connectivity not just with the rest of India but also with neighbouring countries.”
The Chief Minister emphasised that the twin recognition will transform the airport into a gateway for international travel and cargo movement, greatly benefiting tourism, horticulture exports, and overall trade in the region. It is expected to reduce travel time dramatically for passengers from Arunachal and neighbouring states while boosting economic activities.
Donyi Polo Airport, which became operational in 2022, has already been serving domestic flights. The new international status and customs clearance facility will now allow direct international operations, making Itanagar more accessible to global tourists and business travellers.
This development is being seen as a major boost to the Centre’s Act East Policy and efforts to enhance infrastructure and connectivity in India’s easternmost state.
