Two Arrested in Gorakhpur for Alleged Racial Attack on Naga Woman Doctor

Police in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, have arrested two individuals in connection with the alleged racial assault and verbal abuse of a Naga woman doctor working at a private hospital in the city. The incident, which occurred on February 23, 2026, has triggered strong condemnation across Nagaland and other northeastern states.

According to the FIR lodged by the victim, the 28-year-old doctor from Nagaland was on duty when two men entered the hospital premises and began hurling racial slurs targeting her appearance and northeastern identity. The accused reportedly used derogatory terms, physically pushed her, and threatened further violence when she objected to their behavior.

The woman immediately informed hospital authorities and the police. A case was registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, including provisions for voluntarily causing hurt, criminal intimidation, and acts intended to outrage religious feelings or insult the modesty of a woman, along with charges under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act where applicable.

Following swift investigation and identification through CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts, Gorakhpur police arrested both suspects within hours. They are currently in custody, and interrogation is underway to establish motive and any prior connections.

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, Union Minister of State for Social Justice & Empowerment Ramdas Athawale, and several Naga student bodies and civil society organizations have condemned the incident and demanded exemplary punishment. They have also called for stricter enforcement of laws protecting citizens from racial discrimination and hate crimes, especially in metropolitan and non-NE cities.

The victim has received support from the hospital administration, local Naga community in Uttar Pradesh, and the Nagaland House in Delhi. Authorities have assured her full protection and necessary legal assistance.

This latest episode has once again spotlighted the persistent issue of racial bias and discrimination faced by people from the Northeast in other parts of India, renewing calls for nationwide awareness campaigns, sensitivity training for law enforcement, and stronger implementation of anti-discrimination measures.
