Arunachal Pradesh CM Pema Khandu Unveils Rs 2 Lakh Crore Hydropower Push to Drive Economic Transformation

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has positioned hydropower as the cornerstone of the state’s economic advancement, announcing upcoming projects valued at Rs 2 lakh crore that are poised for implementation. This ambitious plan is expected to generate substantial revenue and create thousands of employment opportunities, marking a new era of growth for the region.

During celebrations at IG Park marking the state’s foundation day, Khandu designated the period from 2025 to 2035 as the ‘Decade of Hydropower.’ He outlined the sector’s critical importance, stating that 1.2 GW of capacity is already functional, with an additional 4.8 GW in development stages. Notable ventures include the 2,000-MW Subansiri Lower Project, anticipated to wrap up soon, and the 2,880-MW Dibang Project, scheduled for commissioning by 2032.

According to the Chief Minister, these developments will yield around Rs 4,000 crore in annual earnings while offering more than 30,000 direct positions and 16,000 indirect roles, significantly bolstering local economies.

Khandu also drew attention to Arunachal’s abundant mineral resources, including coal and graphite, where several mining concessions have been awarded and further explorations are ongoing. He described the state’s evolution from a peripheral border area to a dynamic economic powerhouse, citing impressive growth metrics: a 166% rise in Gross State Domestic Product since 2015, a 105% increase in per capita income, and a 218% expansion in the state budget over the same timeframe.

Infrastructure, particularly connectivity, remains a foundational element of this progress. Road infrastructure has expanded by 251%, with 4,060 km of national highways under construction and Rs 55,000 crore allocated for border highway enhancements.

In healthcare, investments totaling Rs 3,666 crore are set to improve services statewide. Education is also a priority, with the ‘Mission Shikshit Arunachal 2029’ initiative committing Rs 750 crore toward modernizing schools, constructing hostels, integrating AI-based oversight, and introducing the country’s pioneering 3D-printed educational facilities.

This comprehensive strategy underscores Arunachal Pradesh’s potential to emerge as a leader in renewable energy and sustainable development, fostering prosperity and self-reliance in India’s Northeast.
