Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has fired back at the Congress party, dismissing their accusations regarding his personal land holdings as baseless and urging them to pursue the matter legally. During a public address in Bongaigaon, Sarma expressed confidence in his position, revealing that he has already pursued a defamation lawsuit against the claims.
Sarma emphasized that any inquiries into his assets should be directed through proper judicial channels. “Anyone curious about my land ownership can raise it in court—that’s why I’ve filed a defamation suit,” he stated firmly. He brushed off potential lawsuits from Congress figures, including MLA Shivamoni Bora, Diganta Barman, and even Rahul Gandhi, saying, “Let them file cases; I’ve shown them the door—I’m not intimidated.”
The Chief Minister also touched on internal dynamics within the opposition, alleging that certain factions in Congress are undermining their own MP, Gaurav Gogoi. “Some elements in Congress are plotting against Gaurav Gogoi, which is why I’ve bolstered security to prevent any sympathy-gaining tactics,” Sarma claimed.
Shifting to electoral strategies, Sarma affirmed the BJP’s strong stance in key areas, particularly Abhayapuri. “The BJP will confidently contest Abhayapuri; whoever I nominate will hold the seat securely,” he declared, underscoring the party’s organizational resilience.
However, he candidly admitted hurdles in other constituencies, like Bilasipara, where internal disputes over candidate selection could pose risks. “Ticket infighting in Bilasipara might cost us the win there,” Sarma conceded. He also discussed potential ripple effects, noting that if Bhupen Roy runs from Abhayapuri, it could force BJP to prioritize Bongaigaon.
This exchange intensifies the political rivalry in Assam, highlighting issues of accountability, party infighting, and strategic positioning ahead of upcoming polls in the Northeast.
