Shocking video footage has surfaced showing armed militants in camouflage uniforms setting fire to houses and vehicles while firing rounds into the air — a terrifying scene from Litan Sareikhong in Manipur’s Ukhrul district amid escalating communal tensions.
The unrest erupted after an alleged assault on a Tangkhul Naga man by seven to eight persons at Litan village on Saturday night. Tensions boiled over on Sunday evening with intense stone-pelting between the Tangkhul Naga and Kuki communities, forcing authorities to impose strict prohibitory orders.
At midnight on Monday, alleged Kuki militants launched a targeted arson attack in the Kuki-dominated Litan Sareikhong area, burning down at least nine houses belonging to the Tangkhul Naga community, including a rural bank. In retaliation, three Kuki houses were also reportedly set ablaze in nearby Sikibung and surrounding villages.
Ukhrul District Magistrate Asish Das immediately invoked Section 163 of BNSS 2023, banning all movement and activities that could disturb peace from 7 PM on February 8 until further orders. Only government officials and security personnel are exempted. Additional forces have been rushed to all routes leading to Litan to restore calm.
The viral 1-minute video, now circulating widely on social media, captures the chaos: armed men openly torching properties and shooting in the air, heightening fears of further escalation in the already fragile Manipur hills.
This fresh outbreak of violence underscores the fragile ethnic balance in Ukhrul and the urgent need for sustained peace efforts in the district.
