In a significant endorsement of the central government’s fiscal strategy, Arunachal Pradesh BJP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Pabitra Margherita has praised the Union Budget 2026-27 for its visionary approach and dedicated attention to the Northeast region, particularly Arunachal Pradesh. Speaking at a press conference held at the state BJP headquarters in Itanagar, Margherita highlighted how the budget aligns with national growth ambitions while prioritizing regional progress.
Margherita commended the budget as a progressive blueprint that instills confidence in India’s diverse regions. He noted that it embodies Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s conviction that the Northeast has transitioned from the periphery to a central driver of the nation’s economic narrative. The leader pointed out Modi’s six visits to Arunachal Pradesh since taking office, which demonstrate a deep commitment to the state’s strategic, economic, and cultural advancement under the NDA administration.
A key aspect emphasized was the surge in public capital expenditure, which has escalated from Rs 2 lakh crore in 2014-15 to Rs 12.2 lakh crore for the financial year 2026-27. This boost is set to fuel infrastructure-driven expansion nationwide, with substantial benefits for Northeastern states.
Specific allocations for Arunachal Pradesh include Rs 20,666 crore in tax devolution and Rs 43,197 crore in grants-in-aid for 2026-27, markedly enhancing the state’s fiscal strength. Margherita contrasted this with the previous decade (2004-2014), when the state received only Rs 5,749 crore in tax devolution, against over Rs 1.53 lakh crore under the current NDA regime.
The budget also allocates Rs 6,812.3 crore to the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), underscoring targeted investments. Notable initiatives encompass the development of Buddhist tourism circuits, promotion of agarwood farming, upgrading the National Mental Health Institute in Tezpur to a premier regional facility, and a pilot program to train 10,000 tourist guides at 20 key sites. Additionally, plans to add one lakh allied health professionals over five years aim to bolster healthcare and job creation. Focus on the Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, and Comics (AVGC) industry is expected to spur innovation, skills, and employment for the youth.
Margherita described the budget as a forward-thinking guide for a developed Arunachal, in sync with the Viksit Bharat vision by 2047. He appreciated ongoing interest-free loans via the Special Assistance to States for Capital Expenditure scheme, which has facilitated investments in essential infrastructure like roads, bridges, educational institutions, and medical centers, extending benefits to remote border areas.
The budget’s provision for Rs 5,000 crore per City Economic Region over five years further supports urban and economic hubs. Overall, Margherita lauded Prime Minister Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for crafting a balanced fiscal plan that promotes responsibility, ambition, and sustainable regional equity, ensuring steady advancement for Arunachal and the entire Northeast.
This fiscal framework is poised to accelerate tourism, livelihoods, and inclusive growth, reinforcing the NDA’s dedication to transforming the region into a powerhouse of opportunity.
