Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Warns of ‘Wealth Shift’ Threatening State’s Demographic Balance Through Land Transactions

Chief Minister Spotlights Rising Patterns of Property Sales, Calls for Vigilance to Protect Indigenous Assets and Economic Equity

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has voiced deep apprehensions regarding evolving land ownership dynamics that extend beyond mere population shifts, labeling them a potential harbinger of long-term societal disruption. Highlighting a surge in transactions where indigenous communities are divesting properties to non-indigenous buyers, Sarma emphasized the need for heightened scrutiny to preserve the state’s cultural and financial fabric.

Delving into recent oversight measures, the Chief Minister disclosed that administrative reviews of land transfer approvals have uncovered a disproportionate trend: a marked increase in sales from Hindu landowners to Muslim purchasers, particularly evident in traditionally stable upper Assam regions like Tinsukia. “Our analysis of population trends from 2001 to 2011 reveals a consistent decline in Hindu growth rates alongside rising Muslim demographics across every block,” Sarma noted, underscoring how these figures align with the observed property flux.

He clarified a nuanced stance, expressing no reservations toward transactions involving local Assamese Muslim families, which he views as integral to the state’s pluralistic ethos. However, the broader pattern signals an alarming pivot: “This isn’t just about headcounts anymore—it’s a redistribution of wealth that could erode economic control from native hands,” Sarma cautioned, framing the phenomenon as a stealthy erosion of generational legacies.

Sarma portrayed this “wealth transfer” as a red flag for impending instability, where unchecked sales might amplify vulnerabilities in resource allocation and community self-sufficiency. “Such shifts represent a sign of destruction for our shared heritage—every citizen must guard their land as a sacred trust, ensuring our demographic and prosperous equilibrium endures,” he implored, rallying for collective stewardship to counter these undercurrents.

This proactive alert not only amplifies ongoing dialogues on asset protection but also reinforces Assam’s commitment to equitable growth, where vigilance safeguards both identity and opportunity for future generations.
