Fake Astrologer Faces Decade in Prison for Heinous Sexual Assault in Arunachal’s Longding District

Khonsa Sessions Court Delivers Swift Justice in Dual Convictions, Including Tantric Impostor Case, Reinforcing Crackdown on Gender-Based Crimes and Homicide

In a landmark ruling underscoring Arunachal Pradesh’s resolve against heinous offenses, the Sessions Court in Khonsa has handed down severe penalties in two high-profile criminal matters. The spotlight falls on a brazen sexual assault perpetrated by a self-proclaimed tantric astrologer, who exploited superstition to prey on a vulnerable woman, earning him a 10-year prison term.

The primary case centers on Subrajit Banerjee, a 39-year-old from Buragaon village in Assam’s Hojai district. Posing as a spiritual healer alongside his accomplice Sibu Mitra, Banerjee lured the victim to her aunt’s home in Longding town under the guise of performing an exorcism ritual to banish an alleged evil spirit. Once isolated, he allegedly rendered her unconscious and carried out the assault, shattering the trust of a community gripped by fear and deception.

Swift police intervention turned the tide. Led by Officer-in-Charge Inspector Tukut Konia, Sub-Inspector T. Padung, and Constable Bolum Wangpan, the Longding Police launched an immediate pursuit. Drawing on crucial intelligence, the duo was nabbed the very next day near Zedua village on the highway, ensuring no escape from accountability. The investigation, overseen by Deputy Superintendent of Police Mape Zirdo, unraveled the plot with meticulous evidence gathering, culminating in Banerjee’s conviction under Sections 354, 354A, 376, 448, and 34 of the Indian Penal Code, alongside Section 3 of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

The court imposed a rigorous 10-year sentence on Banerjee for this attempted rape, a verdict that resonates as a stern warning to impostors weaponizing faith for foul play. The victim, now on the path to recovery, has benefited from dedicated counseling services, while both accused remain under judicial lockup as probes deepen.

In a parallel blow to violent crime, the court also convicted Guru Rai Murmur for a brutal murder under Section 302 of the IPC. Hailing from the region, Murmur was slapped with life imprisonment and a Rs 20,000 fine in connection with Tissa Police Station Case No. 25/2024. Sub-Inspector T.W. Salingpa’s team, guided by Superintendent of Police Longding, pieced together irrefutable proof that expedited this closure.

Superintendent of Police Longding hailed the judiciary’s efficiency, extending profound thanks to the bench for prioritizing victim-centered justice. “Our force stands unyieldingly committed to dismantling networks of abuse and violence, safeguarding every citizen’s dignity through proactive policing and uncompromised enforcement,” the SP affirmed.

These convictions not only deliver solace to shattered lives but also amplify Arunachal’s broader campaign against gender atrocities and predatory frauds, urging communities to remain vigilant against manipulative schemes masquerading as mysticism.
