Shillong – The Meghalaya government is intensifying efforts to register approximately 6 lakh residents who remain without Aadhaar cards, a crucial requirement for accessing various welfare and development schemes. State officials reported that around 28 lakh people are currently enrolled in the Aadhaar database, leaving a significant gap to bridge.
East Khasi Hills and West Garo Hills are among the districts with the lowest enrollment rates, with over 3 lakh residents yet to register. A senior official highlighted ongoing campaigns to boost participation, noting challenges like public apathy. “We’re working round-the-clock to ensure everyone is covered under the Unique Identification Authority of India,” the official said.
The state recently earned accolades for its progress in biometric updates for children and adult verifications, enrolling over 37,000 kids under five and nearly 7 lakh youths aged 5-18. Joram Beda, State Nodal Officer for Aadhaar, praised the team’s dedication, emphasizing that these efforts reflect Meghalaya’s commitment to inclusive growth. The government aims to accelerate enrollment to ensure all residents can access essential services.
