A 12-hour bandh called across Arunachal Pradesh’s East Siang district over the Education Department’s ongoing teacher transfer and rationalisation exercise was observed peacefully, with no untoward incidents reported from any part of the district.

The shutdown was called by the Bogong Banggo Yameng Kebang (BBYK) together with eight youth and student organisations. According to reports, the bandh saw a widespread response across the district, with normal public life remaining affected through the bandh hours while the situation stayed calm throughout.

What the Protest Was About

The organisations are opposing the manner in which the Education Department is carrying out its teacher transfer and rationalisation exercise in the district. The protesting groups have been demanding that their concerns over the exercise be heard and addressed by the authorities, and the bandh was called as a mark of protest to press that demand.

Administration Kept Watch

Police and the district administration kept a close watch on the situation through the day to ensure that the shutdown remained peaceful. With the bandh passing off without any report of violence or disruption beyond the shutdown itself, officials described the overall law and order situation in the district as normal.

Dialogue Expected Next

With the peaceful bandh now over, attention turns to whether the Education Department will open talks with the BBYK and the student organisations to resolve the issues raised over the transfer exercise. The organisations have maintained that their agitation is aimed at protecting the interests of students and the teaching community in the district, and further steps are expected to depend on the administration’s response.
