The classrooms are smarter, the labs are modern, and for the students of Boleng, things just got a whole lot better.
Arunachal Pradesh Education Minister Pasang Dorjee Sona travelled to Boleng in the Siang district on Saturday to inaugurate the newly developed infrastructure of the Government Higher Secondary School — and by the looks of it, this was no ordinary ribbon-cutting.
The upgrade comes under the state government’s Golden Jubilee Model School Programme, an initiative specifically designed to pull government school infrastructure into the 21st century. What students in Boleng now have access to is a shiny new G+2 academic-cum-administrative block, modern science laboratories, smart classrooms, a proper library, and a range of other essential facilities. For a government school in a remote district like Siang, that is not a small thing. That is a leap.
Speaking at the inauguration, Minister Sona did not mince words. He made clear that new buildings alone are not the end goal — what matters is whether they actually translate into better learning for the students who walk through those doors every day. He stressed that upgraded classrooms and laboratories must support not just better teaching, but better outcomes. The infrastructure is the means, he seemed to say. The student is the point.
It’s a message worth holding onto, especially in a state where the gap between urban and rural educational infrastructure has long been a point of concern. Siang is not Itanagar. Getting quality facilities here takes a different kind of political will, and this investment signals something.
Sona was joined at the event by quite a crowd of dignitaries — Local MLA and Panchayati Raj and Transport Minister Ojing Tasing, Advisor Er. Talem Taboh, the Rumgong MLA, district administration officials, Panchayati Raj Institution representatives, teachers, and of course, the students themselves. The students, who were in attendance to watch their school get officially upgraded, were arguably the most important people in that room.
The Golden Jubilee Model School Programme, which the state government has been rolling out across Arunachal Pradesh, is aimed at creating better-equipped, more dignified learning spaces in government schools. Boleng’s Higher Secondary School is one of the latest to benefit from the scheme — but if the government stays consistent, it won’t be the last.
There’s something quietly significant about what happened in Boleng this weekend. No dramatic announcement, no political theatre — just a new building, new labs, and a government making good, at least in part, on its promise to students in one of the state’s far-flung corners. Whether this new infrastructure gets used to its fullest potential will depend on teachers, administrators, and the communities around it. But the foundation — quite literally — is now in place.
For the children of Siang, that foundation is everything.
