A woman is lying in a hospital bed in Dibrugarh. A car is in a forensic lab. And now, the man who was allegedly behind the wheel when shots were fired has been arrested. The Lal Pahar firing case in Namsai, Arunachal Pradesh, is no longer just a disturbing rumour circulating in district circles — it’s a full-blown criminal investigation, and things are moving fast.
The Incident That Set It All in Motion
On July 17, police received information that a 29-year-old woman had sustained firearm injuries during what is being referred to as the Lal Pahar firing incident in Namsai district. She was first taken to the District Hospital in Namsai, then shifted to Dibrugarh under police escort for more advanced care. A day later, things got more serious. On July 18, a written complaint related to counter-insurgency (CI) operations came in from the 8th Assam Rifles, after which Namsai Police registered Case No. 44/2026 under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Arms Act, 1959. The involvement of Assam Rifles added a weight to this case that couldn’t be ignored.
SIT Formed, Driver Arrested
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) was constituted under the supervision of Superintendent of Police Sangey Thinley, with the investigation handed to SDPO Namsai, Dy SP Kengo Dirchi. The SIT didn’t waste time. During the course of the probe, police arrested the suspected driver of the Maruti Suzuki WagonR allegedly involved in the case, and the vehicle has been seized and examined by forensic experts. A car. A driver. A woman with a bullet wound. The pieces are beginning to form a picture, even if the full story isn’t out yet.
Forensics Takes Centre Stage
This investigation is clearly going the distance. All relevant biological, ballistic and material evidence has been properly labelled, sealed and preserved before being sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) for scientific examination. The SIT has also carried out multiple visits to the crime scene, documenting everything they can find. Electronic evidence is also being thoroughly collected, preserved and analysed. That includes what we can only assume is CCTV footage, call records and digital trails — the kind of stuff that’s increasingly becoming the backbone of serious criminal investigations today.
A Second Case Filed by the Victim
It doesn’t stop at just one FIR. Based on the complaint filed by the injured woman herself, Namsai Police have registered a separate case — Case No. 45/2026 — against unknown miscreants under the BNS and Arms Act, and a parallel investigation is now underway. Namsai Police have also appealed to the public to stay calm and not spread unverified information, promising updates as the probe progresses.
A young woman was shot. The system is now, finally, answering for it — with science, law and accountability. Whether justice reaches her all the way in that Dibrugarh hospital room is the question that Namsai — and all of Arunachal — is waiting to see answered.
