One Dead, Six Hurt in Fire at Oil India Assam Plant

A fire during maintenance at Oil India's Tengakhat facility in Assam kills one worker and injures six others; the company will investigate.

One worker died and six others were injured in a fire at an Oil India facility in Assam, the company said. Seven workers suffered burn injuries in the incident, and one of them died.

The fire broke out at the facility in Tengakhat, in the state’s oil-bearing belt. According to the company, the incident took place during maintenance work at an indirect bath heater, equipment used to heat crude oil and gas to maintain pipeline flow.

Fire brought under control

The fire was extinguished and the situation is under control, the company said. All the injured workers are receiving medical treatment. Oil India has set up an internal committee to investigate the incident and assess the damage.

No further details about the condition of the injured workers or the extent of damage to the facility have been released so far. The findings of the internal committee are expected to establish what went wrong during the maintenance work and whether safety procedures were followed.

Safety questions in the oil belt

Oil India is one of the country’s major public sector oil producers, with extensive operations across Upper Assam. Its fields, pipelines and processing facilities employ thousands of workers, and maintenance work on live oil and gas equipment carries well-known risks.

Incidents of this kind renew questions about industrial safety standards, emergency response and the protection of contract and regular workers at energy installations. For the families of the workers involved, the immediate concern is medical care and support, while the investigation will decide whether the fire was an accident or the result of a lapse that could have been prevented.

Assam has also seen a large eviction drive in Dhubri district that displaced thousands of people, while the Northeast continues to pay the price of environmental and industrial pressures. The Tengakhat fire adds a workplace safety dimension to the region’s running concerns.
