Delhi Police have stepped up security across central Delhi and issued a traffic advisory restricting movement on 20 roads around Connaught Place from the afternoon, ahead of the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) planned ‘Lahra Do Tiranga’ march at Central Park. The Aam Aadmi Party has also urged its supporters and the public to join the protest in large numbers.
No Permission Granted
Delhi Police Public Relations Officer Neha Yadav said no permission has been granted for the march, adding that a prohibitory order under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita is already in force in Connaught Place and its adjoining areas, restricting large public gatherings. The police indicated that permission could be granted to a group of 11 persons at a suitable space to carry the national flag and sing the national anthem. Central Park will remain closed to the public on October 16 and 17 for administrative reasons, the New Delhi Municipal Council announced.
20 Roads to Avoid
Commuters have been advised to avoid Sansad Marg, Baba Kharak Singh Marg, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Marg, Panchkuian Road, Basant Lane, Chelmsford Road, Minto Road, Barakhamba Road, Kasturba Gandhi Marg, Janpath, Rafi Marg, C-Hexagon, Mandi House, Patel Chowk, Windsor Place, Gole Dak Khana, Ashok Road from GPO to C-Hexagon, Tilak Marg, Tolstoy Marg and Sikandra Road. Dynamic traffic diversions will be implemented through the afternoon based on the ground situation, and commuters have been asked to follow official Delhi Traffic Police handles for real-time updates.
Court and Earlier Protests
The security arrangements came up before the Delhi High Court, where the police assured the bench that all possible legal measures would be taken to manage the proposed protest. The capital has seen repeated flashpoints around protests in recent weeks, including a protest against the election chief that left parts of Delhi sealed and the opposition taking its voter-list fight to the Supreme Court.
