He came, he served, and when it was time to leave, an entire district came out to say thank you. Keyi Panyor bid a heartfelt farewell to Superintendent of Police Angad Mehta, IPS, on Thursday — and the warmth in the room said more than any official speech could.
A Departure That Felt Personal
Farewells for government officers can often feel like formalities — polite words, a bouquet, and a handshake. This one was different. The district administration, public representatives, police officers, and ordinary residents all turned up to honour Mehta, not because protocol demanded it, but because his work had genuinely touched lives. That kind of send-off is earned, not arranged.
Policing That Went Beyond Patrolling
During his tenure, Mehta quietly reshaped what policing looked like in Keyi Panyor. One of the most significant milestones was the first-ever sitting of the Special Executive Magistrate’s Court under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) 2023 — a landmark moment for the district’s criminal justice system. He also ran weekly anti-drug awareness programmes, actively promoted the MANAS National Narcotics Helpline (1933), cracked down on illegal mining, and tightened the enforcement of Inner Line Permit regulations. None of these are small things, especially in a district that sits in a sensitive frontier zone.
Community First — Always
What set Mehta apart was that he didn’t treat policing as a one-way street. Under the Police Civic Action Programme, he upgraded the Government Residential School at Lichlith. He launched the SP Keyi Panyor Fellowship Programme to bring young people closer to civic life. He established the Sangam Centre, opened a community library at Dem, and set up Kitaab Stations at Yazali Police Station and Yazali Ekta Bhawan — reading spaces inside police premises. That last one especially feels like something you wouldn’t expect, and that’s exactly the point.
When the Floods Hit, He Showed Up
Leadership is often measured in quiet times. It reveals itself in crisis. When flash floods struck Possa Village and the NEEPCO Colony, Mehta personally coordinated rescue, relief operations, and law-and-order management on the ground. His administration also made sure elections in the district were conducted peacefully — no small feat. He capped it all off with health camps for police personnel, plantation drives, and cybercrime awareness programmes across the district.
As Angad Mehta moves on to his next assignment, Keyi Panyor is left with libraries in police stations, youth fellowships, cleaner campuses, and a community that finally felt heard by its own force. That, more than any transfer order, is the mark of a public servant worth remembering.
