For anyone who has watched a sick relative struggle through multiple train changes just to reach a hospital in Chennai, this news will hit differently.
Rajya Sabha MP Tai Tagak sat down with Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in New Delhi on July 23 and made a case that many in Arunachal Pradesh have quietly been making for years — the Northeast deserves a direct rail link to the south of India, and it’s long overdue.
A Simple Ask With a Big Impact
Tagak urged the Union Minister to introduce a direct train service between Naharlagun and Chennai, pointing out that such a connection would make life considerably easier for students, patients, professionals and everyday passengers who travel from the Northeast to southern India — particularly Tamil Nadu. Think about what that actually means in practice. Right now, travelling from Naharlagun to Chennai involves long waits, multiple changes, and a journey that can eat up days. A direct express train changes all of that. It’s not just about convenience — for a patient seeking specialist medical care or a student heading to college, it could genuinely be life-changing.
More Than Just a Train Route
The meeting wasn’t only about the Chennai connection. Tagak also requested that the Naharlagun–New Delhi AC Superfast Express be renamed “Arunachal Express,” saying the name would strengthen a sense of identity, pride and patriotism among the people of the state. It’s a small thing on paper, but names matter. A train called “Arunachal Express” carries weight — it tells people across the country that this corner of India has a voice, a presence, and a place on the national rail map.
A Smart Backup Plan
Tagak didn’t walk into that meeting with just one idea. As an alternative to the direct Chennai service, he proposed a well-coordinated southbound superfast train connection from New Jalpaiguri with the Naharlagun–New Delhi AC Superfast Express, to ensure seamless connectivity if an immediate direct service isn’t feasible. It shows a pragmatic understanding of how railways work — if you can’t get everything at once, at least make sure the connections are smooth and the waiting isn’t a nightmare.
The Minister’s Response
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw gave the proposals a patient hearing and responded positively, with the Ministry of Railways assuring that the requests would receive due consideration. Tagak described the meeting as cordial, constructive and productive, and expressed gratitude for the minister’s continued support in improving transportation infrastructure for Arunachal Pradesh and the Northeast.
“Due consideration” is the language of government, and people have heard it before. But with railway budgets expanding and Northeast connectivity becoming a real political priority in recent years, there’s reason to believe this time the push might actually land somewhere.
Arunachal Pradesh has waited a long time to feel truly connected to the rest of India through its railways. If a train from Naharlagun can someday roll into Chennai without a passenger having to drag their luggage across three platforms — that’s not just infrastructure. That’s dignity.
