The Indian Army has debunked social media claims that Chinese forces defeated Indian troops and advanced nearly 50 km into Arunachal Pradesh, bringing parts of Indian territory under the control of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA).
In a post on X, the Army’s fact-checking handle said suspected Pakistan-sponsored accounts were coordinating the spread of the claims to promote a misleading narrative against the Indian Army.
Six accounts named
Under the heading “Coordinated Inauthentic Behaviour Exposed”, the Army identified six X accounts that circulated similar content within hours of each other. The posts included claims of a 50-km Chinese advance along with videos showing soldiers in a wooded, rocky landscape. The Army described the allegations of PLA control over Indian territory as unsubstantiated.
“These false claims are being amplified in a coordinated manner to promote a misleading anti-Indian Army narrative,” the Army said. It added that the campaign followed a recurring pattern of fabricating Indian military defeats, exaggerating Chinese territorial advances and making unsubstantiated claims of PLA control.
A pattern of misleading videos
The Army has flagged similar misleading content about India-China face-offs in Arunachal Pradesh in the past. It has previously pointed out footage of a counter-terrorism mock drill in Karnataka, a Kazakhstan special forces exercise and videos of protests against the proposed Siang dam project, all circulated with captions suggesting Chinese advances or Indian military setbacks.
The Army also exposed a digitally altered video that falsely attributed claims about Chinese control of parts of Arunachal Pradesh to Lt Gen Girish Kalia. It has urged social media users to verify border-related claims through credible and official sources before sharing them.
Questions have already been raised in Parliament over reported face-offs along the Line of Actual Control in Arunachal Pradesh, while claims about Chinese troops blocking Indian patrols have also surfaced in the political debate. The Army’s fact-check draws a line between those contested reports and outright fabrication.
