Two Myanmar nationals caught red-handed with heroin in Arunachal Pradesh — and that was just the beginning of a very busy 48 hours for the Assam Rifles.
Caught at the Border
Acting on specific intelligence inputs, troops of the Assam Rifles moved into the Nampong area of Changlang district on August 28 and intercepted two Myanmar nationals attempting to push narcotics across the border. When the dust settled, 130 grams of heroin — valued at approximately Rs 24 lakh — had been recovered from their possession. It’s the kind of seizure that doesn’t make headlines for its weight alone, but for what it signals: the Indo-Myanmar border in Arunachal remains a live artery for drug traffickers, and it’s being watched.
Changlang district has long been one of the more sensitive stretches of India’s eastern frontier. The region’s dense forests and porous borders make it a preferred corridor for smugglers. Which is exactly why an intelligence-driven strike like this matters — it’s not just a bust, it’s a message.
Mizoram Sees Even Bigger Haul
The same week brought a far larger seizure further south. In a joint operation between the Assam Rifles and Mizoram Police, a raid on Chanmari in Aizawl on August 27 led to the arrest of three individuals and the recovery of 878 grams of methamphetamine tablets. Street value? An estimated Rs 2.63 crore. The accused were handed over to Aizawl Police for proceedings under the NDPS Act.
Methamphetamine — or “yaba” as it’s popularly known across Southeast Asia — has been flooding into the Northeast for years, riding the same smuggling routes that once carried only heroin. The scale of this single bust tells you something about just how much of the substance is in circulation.
Not Just Drugs — Areca Nuts Too
In what is perhaps the most overlooked part of these operations, the Assam Rifles and Customs Preventive Force in Champhai made yet another significant seizure on August 28 — this time, 437 bags of areca nuts totalling 32,890 kg, valued at Rs 3.44 crore. The consignment, recovered from Zotlang, was handed over to the Customs Preventive Force for further legal proceedings.
Illegal areca nut smuggling is a booming shadow economy along the Mizoram-Myanmar border and rarely gets the attention it deserves.
The Bigger Picture
Taken together, these operations paint a clear picture — the Assam Rifles are running a tightly coordinated, intelligence-backed campaign across the Northeast’s most vulnerable border zones. Three operations across two states, multiple arrests, and seizures totalling well over Rs 6 crore in contraband. In 48 hours.
The war on cross-border trafficking is far from over. But weeks like this one are a reminder that the men guarding these borders are not sleeping.
