Arunachal’s most powerful student body isn’t asking nicely anymore.
The All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) has put the Arunachal Pradesh Staff Selection Board (APSSB) on notice — implement the state’s new job eligibility rules to the letter, or brace for a fight. In a strongly worded letter to the APSSB Chairman, AAPSU made it crystal clear that there is zero room for shortcuts, dilution, or bureaucratic foot-dragging on this one.
What the New Rules Actually Say
Just two days before AAPSU’s letter landed, on August 26, the Department of Administrative Reforms & Training officially notified a uniform set of eligibility criteria for direct recruitment to Group A, B, and C posts. The rules are straightforward but significant — every candidate must hold a valid Permanent Resident Certificate (PRC), an Arunachal Pradesh Scheduled Tribe (APST) Certificate, and demonstrate proficiency in an Indigenous Tribal Language. These aren’t new demands out of thin air. AAPSU had been pushing for exactly this for years, and seeing it finally put on paper in an official government notification was a moment the student community had long waited for.
The Board Must Act — Now
AAPSU’s message to APSSB was direct: incorporate all three mandatory requirements into every recruitment advertisement going out, whether it’s a fresh notification or one already in the pipeline. The union also specifically called for a post-joining Indigenous Tribal Language test to be built into the system. It’s worth noting that APSSB handles a major chunk of ministerial and non-gazetted recruitment exams across the state — so what the board does, or doesn’t do, affects thousands of young job seekers from indigenous communities.
A Warning With Real Weight Behind It
AAPSU president Meje Taku and general secretary Mato Bui, who signed the letter, weren’t mincing words. The union said it will actively monitor every APSSB advertisement for compliance. Any lapse — any — would invite what they called “strong, immediate resistance” and intensified democratic agitation. Given AAPSU’s track record of mobilising students across the state, this is not a threat anyone in Itanagar should take lightly.
Why This Matters Beyond the Paperwork
At its core, this isn’t just about government jobs. It’s about who gets to call Arunachal Pradesh home and who gets to benefit from its resources. The PRC debate has simmered in the state for decades, touching on identity, belonging, and the survival of tribal communities in a rapidly changing landscape. Having these protections codified into recruitment rules is a step forward — but only if they are actually enforced.
A notification without enforcement is just ink on paper. And AAPSU is making absolutely sure that doesn’t happen this time.
