A man left home for work. He never came back. That is the devastating reality facing the family of Nobin Doley, a labourer from Dhemaji district in Assam, who was killed Tuesday afternoon when a sudden landslide tore through a hydroelectric project site deep inside Arunachal Pradesh’s Kurung Kumey district.
A Routine Afternoon Turned Fatal
It was around 3 PM on August 5 when the hillside above the Parsi Parlo Hydro Power Project gave way without warning. Debris and large boulders came crashing down, burying workers at the site. These are the moments that never make it into the glossy project brochures — the raw, unforgiving danger that migrant labourers face every single day in the rugged hills of Northeast India. Nobin Doley was buried under that debris. He died on the spot, officials confirmed.
One Pulled Out Alive, But Questions Remain
Not everyone perished. Another worker was rescued from beneath the debris and rushed to a nearby medical facility for emergency treatment. That rescue was nothing short of a miracle given the scale of what came down that hill. But here is what is troubling — authorities are yet to ascertain the identity of the injured worker. That a person could be pulled from rubble and still remain unnamed tells you something about how informal and poorly documented labour conditions often are at such remote project sites.
The Project and the Response
According to the Kurung Kumey District Information and Public Relations Officer, the project management has initiated a detailed assessment of the affected site, while administrative procedures are underway. That is the official language. What it really means is that paperwork is moving while a family in Dhemaji is waiting to hear exactly how and why their son or husband or father will not be coming home. The cause of the landslide is under investigation. Given the torrential monsoon conditions battering Arunachal Pradesh this season — with orange alerts already issued for several districts — the rains are the most likely culprit, though nothing has been confirmed yet.
The Bigger Picture Nobody Talks About
Migrant workers from Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, and other states form the invisible backbone of every major infrastructure project in the Northeast. They build the dams, drill the tunnels, and lay the roads. They do it in terrain that would make most people turn back. And when disasters like this happen, the response is almost always the same — an assessment committee, an ongoing investigation, and eventually, silence. Nobin Doley deserved better safety protocols. So does every worker still on that site today.
The mountains of Arunachal are unforgiving. And the least this region owes the people who come here to build its future is the guarantee that they go home alive.
