Twenty-five athletes, coaches, and officials from Arunachal Pradesh are packing their bags for Shillong — and this time, there’s a lot more than a trophy on the line.
SAA Steps Up Before the Big Departure
The Sports Authority of Arunachal (SAA) gave its full backing to the state’s Pencak Silat contingent before they left for the 14th Senior National Pencak Silat Championship 2026–27, scheduled to be held in Shillong, Meghalaya from July 6 to 8. SAA Director Gumnya Karbak personally sat down with the players, coaches, and officials before they hit the road. That kind of direct attention from the top brass matters — it tells the athletes that the state is watching, and more importantly, that it cares. Karbak urged the team to carry themselves with dedication, discipline, and true sportsmanship while representing Arunachal on the national stage.
Kits Distributed, Spirits High
Beyond words of encouragement, Karbak also handed out sports kits to every athlete and official in the contingent. It’s a small gesture on paper, but anyone who has been part of a sports team knows what it feels like to receive that kit — it makes everything real. The team is 25 members strong, comprising 22 athletes, two coaches, and one team official. They will compete across both the senior tanding (combat) and artistic events, giving Arunachal a broad presence across categories.
Why This Championship Carries Extra Weight
Here’s where things get really interesting. The Shillong championship isn’t just another national-level competition — it doubles as the official qualifying event for the 3rd Khelo India Beach Games 2026 in Diu and the prestigious 39th National Games 2027, which will be hosted by Meghalaya itself. That’s two massive multi-sport platforms riding on performances in just three days. Athletes who deliver here won’t just earn medals; they’ll earn a ticket to something far bigger.
Arunachal’s Growing Sports Ambition
This send-off reflects something broader happening in Arunachal Pradesh’s sporting ecosystem. The state has been increasingly investing in combat sports and martial arts disciplines, and Pencak Silat — a Southeast Asian martial art with deep roots in the Northeast — is quietly building a reputation. With institutional support from the SAA and athletes ready to compete at the highest level, Arunachal is no longer just a participant at national championships. It is becoming a contender.
The team departs with the weight of a state’s expectations — and if the energy at that send-off was anything to go by, they are more than ready to carry it.
Shillong, brace yourself.
