Arunachal Pradesh: Nyishi Indigenous Group Denounces Disruption of Nyokum Yullo Rituals, Demands Action

The Nyishi Indigenous Faith and Cultural Society (NIFCS) has strongly criticized the interference with the sacred Nyokum Yullo rituals in Arunachal Pradesh, calling for strict measures against those responsible. The incident, which took place during the traditional celebrations, has sparked outrage among the Nyishi community, who view the rituals as a vital part of their cultural and spiritual heritage.

Nyokum Yullo is an annual festival celebrated by the Nyishi tribe to honor their deities and seek blessings for prosperity and well-being. The event involves elaborate rituals, prayers, and offerings, reflecting the tribe’s deep-rooted indigenous beliefs. However, this year’s festivities were marred by disruptions that the NIFCS described as an affront to their traditions.

In a statement released on Saturday, the NIFCS expressed dismay over the incident, alleging that certain individuals had deliberately interfered with the proceedings. The group refrained from naming the culprits but urged the local administration to investigate the matter thoroughly and take appropriate action. “Such acts of disrespect toward our sacred practices cannot be tolerated,” the statement read, emphasizing the need to preserve the sanctity of their customs.

The society also appealed to the state government to ensure the protection of indigenous faith and cultural practices, which they believe are increasingly under threat. “We request the authorities to uphold our rights and prevent any future disturbances during our religious ceremonies,” the NIFCS added.

Local leaders and community members have echoed the sentiments of the NIFCS, expressing concern over the erosion of traditional values. They stressed that Nyokum Yullo is not just a festival but a symbol of Nyishi identity, passed down through generations. The disruption has fueled discussions about the need for greater awareness and respect for indigenous traditions in the region.

The Arunachal Pradesh government has yet to issue an official response to the incident. However, officials are expected to address the concerns raised by the Nyishi community in the coming days. As the state is home to numerous tribal groups, each with its distinct customs, incidents like these often highlight the delicate balance between cultural preservation and modern influences.

The NIFCS has called for unity among the Nyishi people to safeguard their heritage, urging younger generations to actively participate in and protect their traditions. The controversy surrounding this year’s Nyokum Yullo has brought renewed attention to the challenges faced by indigenous communities in maintaining their way of life amidst changing times.
